Há exatos 36 anos, no A&M Studios em Hollywood, Califórnia, o maestro Quincy Jones arrematava a gravação de um clássico fenomenal da música mundial. A canção, de autoria dos ícones Michael Jackson e Lionel Richie, seria lançada dias depois, em 07 de março de 1985, tornando-se um hino à paz e à solidariedade humana. A música "We Are the World" era parte do projeto "USA (United Support of Artists) For Africa", uma reunião de 45 astros e estrelas da música norte-americana para arrecadar fundos a serem destinados ao combate à fome na Etiópia. O dinheiro arrecadado pelo clipe, pelo álbum e pelo single, cerca de US$ 55 milhões, foi destinado ao combate à crise humanitária que matou mais de um milhão de africanos.
A música, uma maravilha de composição e interpretação, está no meu coração como uma das mais lindas que já ouvi. É um privilégio poder escutar as vozes e performances inspiradas de ícones como Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers (1938–2020), James Ingram (1952–2019), Tina Turner, Billy Joel, Michael Jackson (1958–2009), Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Willie Nelson, Al Jarreau (1940–2017), Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry, Daryl Hall, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper, Kim Carnes, Bob Dylan e Ray Charles (1930–2004). Infelizmente, alguns deles já nos deixaram. E outros mais participaram do coro, como La Toya Jackson, Janet Jackson, Tito Jackson, Randy Jackson, Marlon Jackson, Jermaine Jackson, Jackie Jackson, Waylon Jennings (1937–2002), Bette Midler, John Oates, Jeffrey Osborne, Anita Pointer, Issa Pointer, Ruth Pointer, Smokey Robinson, Dan Aykroyd, Harry Belafonte, Sheila E., Bob Geldof, Lindsey Buckingham e Steve Porcaro. A banda que os acompanhou na gravação teve até um brasileiro, o Paulinho da Costa na percussão, além de David Paich (sintetizadores), Michael Boddicker (sintetizadores, programação), Louis Johnson (1955–2015) (baixo), Michael Omartian (teclados), Greg Phillinganes (teclados) e John Robinson (bateria). A música explodiu no topo das paradas de sucesso, contagiando todo o mundo, vendendo milhões de cópias, arrecadando milhões de dólares para a causa e ganhando prêmios no Grammy.
Por mais que o tempo passe, a canção ainda permanece atualíssima e me toca profundamente o coração, fazendo-me emocionar pelo simples fato de acreditar em um mundo melhor e mais justo socialmente, em que pessoas solidárias e desprendidas se juntam com o belíssimo propósito de ajudar seus semelhantes em situação de calamidade. Gostaria muito que isto acontecesse muito mais vezes, em tempo integral em todas as comunidades do mundo, para que este planeta transbordasse abundantemente de amor, solidariedade e harmonia. Eu morrerei sonhando com isso.
